"Your safety, our priority—protecting homes, one smart solution at a time."
Prevent falls: Falls are a common cause of injury among seniors. To prevent falls, ensure that there is good lighting in all areas of the house, especially in stairways and hallways. Install handrails on both sides of any stairs and make sure they are secure. Keep areas where you walk tidy and free of clutter.
Remove throw rugs or small area rugs, which can be tripping hazards.
Mount grab bars near toilets and on both the inside and outside of your tub and shower. Place nonskid mats, strips, or carpet on all surfaces that may get wet.
Ensure proper lighting: Good lighting is essential for seniors to move around safely. Ensure that there is good lighting in all areas of the house, especially in stairways and hallways.
Consider using motion-activated lights that plug into electrical outlets and automatically turn on when you walk by them to help illuminate stairwells and pathways.
Keep frequently used items within reach: Keep items you use often at waist level or within easy reach. Don’t stand on a chair or table to reach something that’s too high — use a “reach stick” instead or ask for help. Reach sticks are special grabbing tools that you can buy at many hardware or medical-supply stores.
Make sure furniture is arranged safely: Arrange your furniture (especially low coffee tables) and other objects so they are not in your way when you walk. Make sure your sofas and chairs are the right height for you to get in and out of easily.
Install safety devices: Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Make sure they are working properly and replace the batteries regularly. Consider installing a home security system that includes a medical alert feature.
Keep emergency numbers handy: Keep a list of emergency phone numbers near the phone. Include the numbers for your doctor, family members, and friends. Also, keep a list of your medications and allergies in case of an emergency.
Stay connected: Stay connected with family and friends. Consider using a personal emergency response system (PERS) that can summon help in an emergency.
I hope these tips help you ensure home safety for seniors and everyone else.
